Waulking Songs and Your Chance to Compose

29 Sep 2010

Traditional waulking songs helped make the hard work of fulling cloth into a festive gathering.  Here is a gorgeous performance of a traditional Scottish waulking song, performed by singer Margaret Stewart on the BBC series The Highland Sessions. And here's another, sad but beautiful, performed by Karen Matheson. If this doesn't stir your heart-strings, nothing will.

Now, as an antidote, we'll go from the sublime to the silly. In honor of the seasons of the textile year, I have begun composing a little ditty about the many joys of weaving. Here's the first verse:

The Year in Weaving

(Sung to the tune of Deck the Halls)

Celebrate we Nature's bounty,

Fa la la la la, la la la la

Fiber fests in state and county,

Fa la la la la, la la la la

Pet the beasts and see the vendors,

Fa la la, la la la, la la la

Going on a fiber bender,

Fa la la la la,

[Sopranos, a crescendo in the descant, please.]

la la LA LAAAAH

If you think of another verse, add it to the comments or perhaps post a video of you and your friends singing it on our new video gallery. If we can get the whole weaving year in song, maybe we can even get together an Interweave chorus to sing it on camera. Talk about silly!

With a little rearrangement of the original...

Deck the looms with warps of linen,

Fa la la la la, la la la la.

'Tis the season to be weavin’,

Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Weave we joyous, all together,

Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Heedless of the time and bother,

Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Send the shuttle blazing before us,

Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Grab the bar and beat it toward us.

Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Follow drafts in merry measure,

Fa la la la la, la la la la.

While we weave them ever faster,

Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Blast away the old warp, lasses,

Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Hail the new, the fads, the classes,

Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Troll the ancient waulking carol,

Fa la la, la la la, la la la.

Don at last our gay apparel,

Fa la la la la, la la la la.

Our family loves to rewrite Christmas carols so here are my verses for the cause:

Celebrate we gleeful weavers

Fa la la la la, la la la la

Plaids and twills and fringe uneven

Fa la la la la, la la la la

Dig we now throug our yarns stashes

Fa la la, la la la, la la la

We must take more weaving classes

Fa la la la la, la la LA LAAAH

Celebrate we stalwart spinners

Fa la la la la, la la la la

We have all been fiber sinners

Fa la la la la, la la la la

Bags of fine silk and of wool

Fa la la, la la la, la la la

All our closets will stay full

Fa la la la la , la la LA LAAAH

Happy weaving,

Debra Freelove

I loved the waulking songs!  Such haunting melodies - one can almost feel the misty rain falling over the highlands as the women worked over their newly woven tweed.  Will try to get other guild members to sing with me,  but Handwoven may regret the chance you gave me to sing in public.  Beware!   Maryanne McDevitt

Good for you, Maryanne. Bring it on!
