In a clothing class at a recent weaving conference, a woman asked for advice and ideas for using several boxes worth of gorgeous handwoven fabrics. She had been weaving for years but had never been able to muster the courage to cut her beautiful yardage. Three days later, despite the instructor's and students' many suggestions and encouragement, the weaver packed up her boxes and left the class . . . without having made a single snip! Her uncertainty was paralyzing, and, unfortunately, I think she has a lot of company. Sewing with handwoven fabric is a notion that strikes dread into the heart of many weavers.

Barbara Walker said it in a nutshell. “Since the pattern warp takes up differently from the ground warp, it must be tensioned separately. This is most easily done on a loom with two beams.” This wasn’t exactly the answer I was looking for when I went searching for articles from my Handwoven library about turning drafts, although a loud “Amen” sprang quickly from my lips. Barbara wrote this in an article about name drafting for a turned overshot runner in the November/December 1999 issue. In fact, I have woven a fair number of turned supplementary weft projects (in which the pattern thread becomes supplementary warp) successfully without a second warp beam. The one currently on my 8-shaft Norwood loom, however, has some particular challenges.

You never know who you’ll meet in a conference workshop. After two or three days sharing the challenges of warping a rented loom on-site, helping each other follow weaving directions in a busy round-robin, plus dining and enjoying post-workshop liquid refreshments, workshop participants can learn a lot about each other. Personal connections may grow into occasional email correspondence or lifelong friendships. Then one day you open your Handwoven magazine to find your workshop mate is famous.

Some weavers can glance at a draft and see the cloth in their heads, just as a fine musician can see a few notes on a staff and recognize a Bach cantata. Since I took my first weaving class with Madelyn van der Hoogt, I've yearned to be one of those weavers. But it takes time and practice to become truly fluent in a new language. You have to understand the grammar, the idioms, the colloquialisms. The more I learned, the more I found nuances in weaving.
