oh my, that is gorgeous!

i didn't even know you could make something like a small, intense band of color and pattern, in the middle of a field of beautiful solid weaving

such inspiration for me today!

Well I finally got down to making the tubular band. I didn't find anyone here in Bolivia to teach me and used the instructions in Adele Cahlander's book on tubular edging and crossed warped bands. I had tried this years ago when I was living in Chile and couldn't quite get it but something clicked this time.

It is best to clear your head, stop trying to figure out "why" and just follow the steps. I am sure the "why" of it all will become clear once I become more comfortable with the technique. In fact, most of it is clear now.

The band can be simultaneously  woven and sewn to the edge of a piece using the weft as the sewing thread but it is best to practice it without sewing until you get the hang of it.

I made this wee amulet bag (above) and wove and sewed one of the bands onto it. Then I wove and sewed another onto a bag I had made some time ago decorated with a Tarahumara design.

I am hooked! I want to put these tubular bands everywhere now!

Laverne, your work is amazing.  I love the colors and patterns, and, of course,  your execution is outstanding.   Those tubular bands sound fascinating.  I am going to have to learn more about them.

This is what I'm weaving on my Macomber 40" 8 harness loom!  It's a kit I ordered from Jane Stafford Textiles, 30 EPI in bamboo!  I am thrilled with it!

Hi Rebecca,

Love this! I'm a big fan of bamboo too. In your photo, I notice the wool (I think they're wool?) clogs off to the left.  There's just something so pleasant about that. Thanks for sharing, and I hope you will post to the Weaving Today Gallery too.

I love this pattern and all of your other work I've seen. I'm new to the forum so please excuse any blunders.  I have a 30 thread band on my loom  and I'm trying to do pick up.  So far it's not going well!!  Looking for one of your tutorials and hoping I can exchange back-strap onto a 4 shaft floor loom.  I will end up with something, just not what the pattern looks like.  My Celtic ancestors pull me to do the celtic knots etc.    Scottsirish

I'm weaving a large sample to get all the bugs out before I use this on a larger scale. 10/2 cotton on an AVL Full Frame Production Dobby loom with 16 shafts. 8 being used for this project.  The loom was trash and after some repairs it seems to work.
