Hi it's me again! I'm weaving (or attempting to weave) the Swedish Lace Runner: Simple Elegance by Donna Muller (Best of Handwoven - Top Ten Taple Runners on 4 Shafts - pg 13) and I'm confused as to the treadling sequence directly after the initial plain weave. Basically, treadling shows to: lift shafts 1 & 3, then lift shaft 3...but what happens when I do that is I have a float of at least 40 ends (surely that can't be correct). I've check and double checked my threading/denting/etc and it's correct, so...could it be that the draft is incorrect?
Please help!
Thanks
Betty Katherine
Hi Betty Katherine,
In looking at the draft, I think the tie-up for Treadle 3 is wrong.Treadle 3 should be tied to Shaft 1, and not Shaft 3. I think doing will solve your float problem.
(In the more-than-you-ever-wanted-to-know department, the warp threads on shafts 1 and 4 are the "ground" threads in this Swedish Lace draft, so one or the other needs to be tied in every treadle. Shafts 2 and 3 are the "pattern" threads: they are added to or subtracted from the tie-up to make the lace areas.)
Hope this helps,
Lynn Tedder
Dear Lynn,
I am so happy, I could kiss you!!!! I've really put so much effort into this lovely piece and was very upset when (no matter what I tried) it wouldn't work. This makes so much sense...and thanks for the additional info, as it's good to have someone explain things in detail (I'm a detail person).
Again, my sincere thanks,
Kindest regards,
Thank you Lynn Tedder and Betty Katherine!!...I have struggled with this pattern and warp for more than a year, missing completely the project finale that I planned for the runner...I had driven my weaving friends crazy with questions, searched for errata and called Handwoven without a solution...nevertheless, I refused to just skip that block and move on, because I really wanted to make this runner, had bought special thread for it, and promised one to my grand niece...my weaving friends are elated with this news, and I deeply appreciate the fix...christina harper
Thank you Betty Katherine for the question and thank you Lynn Tedder for the answer!!!! It's taken me two days to warp this and to find those 40 floats was driving me crazy!
Back to the loom with a smile on my face!!!
