Hello, I just started working with a 3.5 inch loom from Hazel Rose Looms and have been trying some of my weaving stash that is sitting around. I find that the density of the yarn on the loom is not very high and that the square is more lace-like than something I would make a blanket or quilt out of. I've tried doubling the yarn, which is helpful, but is a bit cumbersome to weave and make sure the strsnds stay intact. I am using the technique that Hazel suggests on her website (using a crochet hook) which I find very efficient and moves fast. Has anyone else faced these challenges or have other suggestions? I really like have a portable weaving project for the times when I am not home sitting in front of my floor loom!
I've liked using a long and flexible weaving needle (about 5" long with a big eye), or a large metal needle with a slightly bent end (I think they are used for lacing in upholstery?). If you use the crochet hook, you can always pull it through from the same side so that the threads are always doubled (may be what you are already doing). If you use wool the openness of the weave is not a problem as fulling should make it stable. You can add extra rows of nails or use each twice, or go for weft-face weaves, stabilize with leno, etc.
