I am about to start my first 4 shaft project and I am confused about the heddles.  Assuming I want to use a simple pattern of shafts repeating 1-4 sequentially, I understand that I start by threading the first heddle on shaft one.  Do I then thread the first heddle of shaft two , the first on shaft three, and the first heddle of shaft four or when I get to shaft 2, do I thread the second heddle and then the third heddle on shaft three and the fourth heddle on shaft four?  Then when I need to thread the repeat, do I thread the second heddle on shaft one or do I thread the 5 th heddle on shaft one?  Maybe it doesn't matter which heddles  I use?

Neal.

You start with the 1st heddle on each shaft and than use the 2nd and so on.

Your heddles slide on the shaft, you can move them where you need.  Have you counted the heddles on each shaft?  Do you have enough on each shaft for the threading pattern?  Do you have many extra heddles on shafts?  My first mistakes were threading away only to discover I did not have enough heddles on a shaft - what a pain to have to add heddles at that point.  If you have a lot of extras, you may want to divide them up on each side of the shaft and tie them out of the way.  It seems overwhelming at first, but it is just a habit now.  Happy weaving, Stephany

I have a personal theory that when I see hear or come across  the same information 3 times (or more) I MUST pay attention because it is important :)

However I am so brand new at this weaving thing I squeek!  and I have just acquired a table loom of unknown vintage, and possibly hand made, with cloth ( lace like ) heddles, I called the former owner and she has no idea where they came from or where to get more ... she bought the loom second hand over 30 years ago ....

does anyone here know of these heddles? they are quite interesting and I have not seen anything like them anywhere....
