I meant to say "two picks of the thin WEFT" ...which is like saying two "rows" of thin weft. When you make Cavandoli knots, the knots pull your warp ends together. So two rows of thin weft help spread them out again. Then I start with the Thick Weft, followed by the thin weft. Rosalie...

Designing is always the time-consuming part of my rep work. In fact, I am working on a rug to honor a former teacher at the Oregon School of Art and Craft. Weavers from the Portland Handweavers Guild were asked to look at Laurie Herrick’s body of work and reinterpret one of her designs. I’ve...

Hi Bridget ... you might be interested in how I'm using the rug. It's my reward that I roll out at night after all the dishes are done and the concrete floor is washed. I then unfurl the rug and turn off the lights. When my husband or I come down in the morning to brew coffee, the rug is there...

Last weekend, I put on a 27” wide warp for a rep project. There are 82 threading blocks in the project. Each block is 5 ends pattern color alternating with 5 ends background color. As you can see from my loom, I have a sectional warp beam, and warp inch by inch. With a sett of 30 epi for 3/2 cotton...

Hi. My name is Pat Martin. Earlier this month I took a three day workshop on Rep, taught by Rosalie Neilson. This workshop was one of the offerings at the Michigan League of Handweavers Summer Workshops. Once home I finished out the warp to make a runner for a chest of drawers. Here it is. I think I...

Hi Maurine ... how's the study group going? Your post in June makes me wonder if you had any more rep-related questions. Rosalie

Hi Lesley .. a "thin weft" slightly thinner than the warp is just fine. In fact, it makes the "ribs" of thick weft even more prominent. Sorry for the delay in answering ... I just got back from a trip. We'd love to see what your project is when you're finished ... how many...

I usually make fringe from 1 1/2" to 3" ... for a hanging, the longer would be appropriate. I wouldn't wash the wall hanging ... just "whap" it with a kitchen towel or use a gentle vacuum if the textile gets dusty. Rosalie Neilson

Michele .. for the fringe, I insert a piece of cardboard about 1 1/2" in height, and a bit longer than the project. I make a row of cavandoli knots (using 2 dents worth of warp or about 5 or 6 warp ends depending on reed). Then I follow this with two picks of the thin pick, and am ready to continue...

Nice job on the sampler. I don't use hemstitching on my rep pieces as a finish. Rather, I use a knot that I learned more than 30 years ago from an Irish sample weaver named Sallie O'Sullivan (in a workshop given at Robin & Russ in McMinnville). She called it a Cavandoli knot, and I've...
